Office of Residence Life

It's our policy

(Please note that the policies noted here represent only those that tend to be of concern to prospective students. All resident students are expected to abide by the terms and conditions of the Residence and Dining Plan Agreement.)

Fire Safety

Considerable emphasis is placed on fire safety at Rensselaer. All residence facilities are equipped with fire and smoke detector equipment that relays an emergency signal to Public Safety if a problem is detected. Student rooms are also furnished with single station smoke alarms. All of our residence halls and apartments are equiped with a sprinkler system. Residence Life policies governing student behavior concerning fire safety are strictly enforced.

An ongoing effort is made to encourage students to evaluate their environment and take reasonable precautions to ensure their safety. Student rooms and apartments are inspected by Residence Life staff once per semester and students are urged to become involved in the university's Residence Life safety efforts.

Personal Security

Residence hall outside doors are kept locked on a 24-hour basis and periodic patrols are conducted within the residence areas. Call boxes have been installed outside of all residence areas to assist students in contacting each other to gain access when needed. Residents are asked to keep room doors locked at all times to guard against problems.

Students are encouraged to utilize the Campus (CDTA) Shuttle, which provides free bus service between the main campus and campus apartments, as well as certain areas of Troy.

Cooking in Rooms

Cooking in areas other than authorized kitchens is prohibited for reasons of fire safety and sanitation. Toaster ovens and other appliances with open coils are forbidden in all residence facilities. Violators of this policy are subject to disciplinary action.

Rensselaer does not discriminate in any manner on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, age, race, color, marital status, national or ethnic origin, religion, or disability.

Personal Property Insurance

Student-owned items are not insured by Rensselaer. Students should carry their own personal insurance on items that may suffer loss or damage. Parents homeowners policies may cover students belongings while at college. Information about an inexpensive Renters Insurance Policy, designed for college students, is available from Residence Life

With the exception of fish, pets are not allowed in student residence halls or apartments.

As of May 20, 2007, the policy stated below will be in affect for all on-campus residential facilities (including apartments).

In keeping with a desire to protect the health of its faculty, staff, students, visitors, other campus constituencies, and the public in general, it is Rensselaer's policy to provide a smoke-free environment to the maximum extent possible and in full conformance with the New York State Public Health Law, Article 13-E (Clean Indoor Air Act).

Smoking is prohibited in all residential areas. The prohibition includes apartments and residence halls - public areas, including waiting rooms, waiting areas, lobbies, lounges, etc.

Additionally, persons who smoke outside the residence halls must do so 25' from the building or any extending wall, awning, or other building feature, or where it is otherwise posted.

Further information about the Institute smoking policy is available from Residence Life.
